Science, Faith, Reason

I’ve seen a few people online saying that you can’t get sick by receiving Holy Communion. I’m sure they’re saying this from a place of piety, but this is bad theology.

1) Catholics profess that the substance of the bread and wine is completely and totally changed, but we also believe that all of the accidents continue to remain. Not “only the accidents that aren’t possibly harmful” remain, all of the accidents remain.

2) St. Thomas says “If it be discovered that the wine has been poisoned, the priest should neither receive it nor administer it to others on any account, lest the life-giving chalice become one of death”

3) To rely on God to protect you through miraculous means is against the command not to tempt God. God gave us the ordinary means of reason and prudence to protect us. Let’s use them as He intended.
